What is Storybroken?

[community profile] storybroken is a dressing room set within the universe defined by ABC's Once Upon A Time. Currently, all interaction takes place in the sleepy town of Storybrooke, Maine, USA. People who live there are actually characters from fairytales and folklore, taken out of their storybook world with only vague memories of their life, altered to fit modern lifestyles. This is a world wherein time had not passed for 28 years and happy endings are a thing of myth.

The show is available to watch on Hulu for our US players.

Why only in Storybrooke?

As the show is still in progress, we've decided to place most interaction within Storybrooke to simplify matters. We simply don't know enough about the setting of the storybook world to feel comfortable making it a free-for-all yet, whereas Storybrooke is placed within the limits of our own world and reality with a slight magical twist to it.

Will we get to play the fairytale versions of our characters?

Absolutely! We plan to have flashback posts every two episodes or so as we learn more about the storybook setting. Since canon seems pretty keen to contradict us fairly often, note that using headcanon and the like is totally allowed and encouraged should you feel like taking a few liberties with where a character is in what time period.

As we learn more about the canon, our standings may change and the setting may simply be placed in both worlds as fits for you. We'll play this one by ear!

What kinds of characters can I play here?

You've got four main options: OUaT-canon characters; fandom AUs; original characters; and other-canon characters.

OUaT-canon characters speak for themselves. They're characters who have shown up in the show so far, such as Snow White/Mary Margaret Blanchard, the Evil Queen/Regina Mills, Rumpelstiltskin/Mr. Gold or Emma Swan.

Fandom AUs are characters from other canons who have had their backgrounds and abilities converted to become fairytale characters, and thus residents of Storybrooke.

Original characters are fairytale characters you would like to play with no canon equivalent, and no one you'd like to convert into the role. Make things up! Have fun!

Other-canon characters are those from the Outside. Someone from another canon happens to be passing by through Storybrooke. They either find themselves stuck in town or are only passing through for a few days. They don't need to be fairytale characters at all. Due to the already bendy-reality of the dressing room, we'll say that even if someone is not from 2011 when they enter, that's the time it will be when they arrive.

What's this about doubles? What about AUs?

Both are completely allowed. We'll just say that the Dark Curse's magic was affected in some way, and not only switched the storybook world's realities, but drew in people from some other versions of it. No matter the AU or how many doubles we have, we ask that you use the same tag as the canon version to keep things organized.

Does my character have to know an AU character/OC?

Nope! This goes either way. If you'd like a character to already be aware of an OC or AU character of any flavor, go right ahead. However, you are under no obligation to make them fit into the background if you don't want to — again, the bendy-reality of the DR makes this perfectly feasible.

In the same vein, we encourage fandom AUs and OCs to put a small description somewhere on their journal about how they see themselves fitting into the setting of Storybrooke and/or the storybook world. It's a good way to figure out what we're dealing with and how we'd all like to build the web of relationships between our characters, canon and noncanon alike.

My character isn't human in canon. How should I handle this?

Our best guess is that if they're non-human but sentient, they'll be transformed into a human upon entry into Storybrooke to maintain the curse's appearance of normality. Whether they're a storybook character or someone who came from Outside, we ask that you consider finding human-form icons for that setting.

If you can find a fairytale to match the form of your non-human in the storybook, then we're fine with them remaining that way in flashback posts and the like.
